Disaster management through radio broadcasting Farhana Ahmed

The recent flood relief operation by The Assam Tribune Group and the Assam Tribune Employees’ Union (ATEU) in Lakhimpur will be remembered for long as it would open new vistas for radio broadcasting handling disaster management. Among the 34 relief materials distributed by The Assam Tribune Group and ATEU on July 26 in flood ravaged Aamtola region of Lakhimpur, there was a transistor radio set, meant for every family that received the aid.

In Lakhimpur district, any radio set could access AIR broadcastings from its Dibrugarh, Guwahati, Jorhat, Itanagar and Mukokchung stations in FM, MW and SW frequencies. The concerned authorities can use the services from these radio stations to reach out to victims of natural disasters. So far the disaster management authorities have done little in terms of using radio for their use in the state. The exemplary act by the Assam Tribune Group and ATEU could pave the way of new application of radio service in managing flood and other natural calamities affecting the masses located in remote areas without electricity.

RADIO KASHMIR REMEMBERS ITS LEGEND MUSIC COMPISER SINGER GHULAM.NABI SHEIKH

Artists paid musical tribute to legendary Kashmiri singer Ghulam Nabi Sheikh in enthralling concert held at Media Complex auditorium

Ghulam Nabi Sheikh was one of the all-time great vocal artists of Kashmir, a majestic musician hailed as transformative by peers and admirers, local light music artists said today. The artists, who enthralled audience at Auditorium hall at Department of Information and Public Relations here during three hour long concert, shared their association with the legendary artist. The musical tribute ‘Ba Yaad-e-Ghulam Nabi Sheikh’ - Remembering Legacy was organized by Radio Kashmir in which all the prominent vocalist and instrumentalists participated. Artist said that the remarkable attribution about Sheikh was that he fashioned his singing along with Ghazal maestro, Mehdi Hassan, a style of singing that did not exist before them. “Sheikh sahib was popularly known as Mehdi Hassan of Kashmir in the artist circles,” the artists said. They said that the ghazal as a song was not part of our culture. However with the contribution of many artists including Shiekh, the light music singing gained popularity in the Himalayan State. Prominent artists including noted Singer and composer, Waheed Jeelani, noted music composer and Singer, Muneer Ahmad Mir, Qaisar Nizami, Shazia Hamid, Raja Bilal, Umer Khan, Aaqib Asad, Shahi Mumtaz, Sunita Bhan paid their musical tributes by singing his compositions and popular songs.

Remembering his time at Radio Kashmir, the then Station Director, Dr Rafiq Masoodi recalled Sheikh as an amazing artist. He said his death created a great musical void in the artist community of Kashmir. He said that Shiekh ran through a variety of pieces in different styles, displaying a command on rhythm and style of singing. Director Information and Public Relations, Muneer-ul-Islam said it was a momentary time for the Department to hold such kind of functions in the department and host the noted artists. He lauded the role of Radio Kashmir for preserving the local music and culture of the State. Station Director and noted broadcaster, Humayun Qaiser, said with his soulful singing, the regionally based light classical idiom and revealing a breathtaking technique and clear, nuanced diction. “He always sang so impressively,” he said. Speaking during the concert, Sheikh’s son Sheikh Arafat thanked the gathering saying for turning to the concert. Programme Executive, AIR and noted broadcaster, Talha Jehangir presented the vote of thanks.

Pertinently Sheikh gained extensive popularity in Jammu and Kashmir, and was particularly famous in Kashmir, where he is still remembered as the “Mehdi Hassan of Kashmir”. He had set up a free music school where he taught music to people interested in singing. Ghulam Nabi Sheikh mysteriously died on the night of July 13-14, 2003. It was found that he died in mysterious circumstances while on a train journey from Jammu to Delhi. On the night of his killing, the noted singer was travelling along with his daughter and a friend to Delhi from Jammu via Shalimar Express.

TEST MATCH COMMENTARY COMES BACK WITH A BANG ON AIR

Old transistor sets were out all over the country bringing back the era of Radio back into view. Test Cricket commentary made a remarkable comeback on All India Radio national network as AIR started to broadcast of live running commentary of the current India Sri Lanka cricket series on 26th July 2017, and this time with an additional feature for its listeners to be part of the commentary by sending SMS during the live commentary, the result over a thousand SMS’s on d Day! Only from all the corners of the country, be it Kashmir or Hyderabad, Guwahati or Bhuj, all congratulating AIR for bringing the old romance of AIR Cricket commentary back into their life. Some messages were real expert comments on the game suggesting how deep rooted is the knowledge of the game in every individual fan of cricket. Comment that the cricket commentary sounds much better on Radio then on T.V is such a delight for all the presenters and the entire team. Another misconception that Test matches are not followed that well is also busted by the innumerable listeners of All India Radio spread all across the country. Just a few of the messages are reproduced here.

5 things about Broadcasting. ....

Basudha Halder Banerji, PEX, AIR Delhi writes for "5 Things" column of The Assam Tribune.
5 things about broadcasting. .............

Radio is a Long Playing Story
Broadcasting in India is 90 years old; having taken its first toddling steps on 23 July, 1927 when the Bombay station of the Indian Broadcasting Company started beaming organized radio programmes. 90 years and still going strong!
I am fortunate to have hitched my wagon onto this magical journey, joining on 25 July 1991 at All India Radio, Guwahati. 26 milestones marked -with memories under each! 26 years of roaming with a microphone, the wanderlust undiluted! Watching the radio landscape changing as we travel on … changing, and how!

Fast Forward
In a world that is shifting gears fast and furious, where technology is outdating itself before we can say hi-tech, where there is a blitzkrieg from the skies in terms of audio-visual content bombardment, newer and yet newer social media platforms gobbling up bigger segments of the pie, people often ask me where is radio headed for? “Na hanyate,” is my reply.
Radio was written off when satellite and cable TV arrived in Asia. This was not the case in the First World. The doomsayers have proclaimed radio dead again and again citing emerging technologies and platforms for audio consumption. Just as the printed book has been written off by many with the advent of e-readers.
I do not believe radio is threatened by the rapid spread of the internet in India. The internet is instead harnessed as a supporting development for stations to launch websites and live stream content. Future radio will make the most of content. The ninety-year-old structure of towers and transmitters will make way for transfer of content through the internet at massive cost cutting and unimagined efficiencies, blurring boundaries between media – all of which will lead to a stage where all content will be consumed on a portable hand-held device. Na hanyate…it does not die! Merely reinvents itself!

An Intimate Story Telling Medium
Radio is the true inheritor of the oral tradition. Of childhood evenings when we huddled around a grandmother who spun magic with her words and transported us to bewitched worlds far away with her stories. This grandmother used music too. And sound effects. She mimicked the voices of giants and trolls. She created the sound effects of a storm in the ocean. She was the original broadcaster.
This is just what we do as radio documentary producers. Tell stories. By playing with sound and silence. By linking interviews with a narration, by mixing suitable music and throwing in some judicious sound effects. By crafting audio pictures. And then transmitting them to the listeners, each one of whom will use her own imagination to interpret what we aurally present to them. To see pictures.

Radio builds Bridges
There is an invisible yet invincible bond between the radio producer/presenter and the listener. The first challenge of the producer is to grab the attention of the listener. And the ultimate challenge is to create an impact. Make someone smile. Or weep. Move someone. Galvanize another. Act as a catalyst. We do all this by ingenuous creation of visuals with sound, a refined craft. There are no cameras, lights, sets, huge casts…just the microphone and a few humans in a studio or in a remote outpost reaching out to the listener. Who gets the impression that the broadcaster is speaking to him and only him.

One of my regular listeners used to be a blind gentleman, whose feedback on my documentaries would always have expressions like, “I saw this…”! No wonder, radio is called “Theatre for the Blind”!

Broadcasting is about Passion
I remember interviewing a senior journalist once who spoke of his boarding school days and the “little red transistor” which he smuggled under the quilt after ‘lights out’, only to listen to Komal G B Singh present her popular Western Music show – A Date with You. The middle aged journalist’s voice carried old echoes of the young boy’s crush on the presenter - “only because of her rich warm voice”! This was years before television arrived in India and Komal would be seen on Doordarshan screens.
..

I had traced out Komal to ask her if she thought of her listener. In her rich, warm voice she told me of the sacksful of listeners’ letters, how they could recognise handwritings, of going that extra mile in pre-Internet days to get that piece of music requested by a listener. Of attending parties where defence officers would tell her how at a remote frontier post on a bleak winter’s day, it was her voice that kept his morale high. “Broadcasting is a passion,” said Komal. “Anything I did came straight from the heart.”

Veteran broadcaster Komal G B Singh could be talking of all of us. Of the magic that is radio. The letters have given way to SMSes and phone calls. But the magic bond endures.

Radio is a Long Playing Song…a song that doesn’t end, merely changing its beat with the times. How can it end, when the listener is out there and at the other end, we are here!
